Hans Memling was born in Germany in the 1430s, but is known as a Flemish painter. He moved to Flanders early in his career and in 1465 was made a citizen of Bruges, where he spent the rest of his life. Little is known about his early career, but it is believed that he trained with Rogier van der Weyden in Brussels before his arrival in Bruges.

Memling was very successful. His output was largely divided between religious work and portraits, although in commissions he received for altarpieces he frequently combined the two. He was prolific and must have had a large workshop.
