HMRC data fiasco sparks call for reform from experts
Tracey Caldwell
The HM Revenue and Customs blunder that led to the loss of CDs containing the personal data of 25 million child benefit recipients has put information management in the spotlight.
As information professionals debate what went so disastrously wrong, copies of emails between the National Audit Office, which requested the data, and HMRC, appeared to show that HMRC was unwilling to remove sensitive data from the CDs because of cost considerations.
The NAO had requested the CDs be delivered "as safely as possible due to their content" but the discs were sent in a tax post wallet, which did not require a signature on receipt.
The information industry called for more professionalism in information management to avoid further errors.
