Amazon releases e-book reader

Kim Thomas

Online retailer Amazon has launched the Kindle, a wireless internet-enabled e-book reader.

At the New York launch, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said books had so far resisted digitisation. "There's a very good reason for that," he admitted. "The book is so highly evolved and suited to its task it's very hard to displace."

At 10oz (280g), the Kindle weighs less than the average hardback but more than a paperback.

It costs $399 and is currently available only in the US. Its electronic paper technology gives a sharp display and avoids the glare of the traditional laptop screen.
