Dieters, Crack an Egg
Women trying to lose a few pounds may be egged on by recent research. Nikhil V. Dhurandhar at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center of Louisiana State University System found that when volunteers cut 1,000 calories from their diets, those assigned to eat eggs for breakfast lost an average of six pounds in eight weeks compared with three and a half pounds for a group eating bagels every morning -- yet the breakfasts were equal in calories. (One meal consisted of two eggs and white toast with reduced-calorie jelly; the other was a bagel, a tablespoon of cream cheese, and less than one serving of fat-free yogurt.) The egg dieters also reduced their waist measurements 83 percent more than the bagel group, and they reported feeling more energetic. Although the mechanism by which eggs aid weight loss isn't clear, Dhurandhar suspects they prompt a sense of fullness that helps people eat less.

People who tend to gain weight around their abdomens are especially likely to benefit from a low-glycemic diet -- even more so than from a low-fat diet, say researchers from Children's Hospital Boston. Among 73 overweight adults, one group consumed a low-glycemic diet that included whole grains, nonstarchy vegetables, fruit (rather than fruit juice), and beans.
