New Diet Drug A diabetes medication mimics hormones that regulate feelings of fullness, thereby helping people control food intake. In studies, overweight users of Symlin were better able to resist tempting foods than placebo takers, and they lost 7 to 8 percent of their body weight over one year. Symlin can cause "mild, transient nausea at high doses," says Christian Weyer of Amylin Pharmaceuticals (which makes Symlin). It must be injected, since oral forms are destroyed by the stomach, but company scientists are working on other delivery modes. Weyer adds that in animal studies, a regimen of Symlin plus the appetite hormone leptin has resulted in twice the weight loss of Symlin alone.

New Brazilian hair-relaxing treatments offered at some salons often contain dangerous levels of formaldehyde, recent lab tests have shown. But a study of more commonly used chemical hair straighteners has found that they do not raise users' risk of breast cancer. The six-year study of 48,167 African-American women revealed no increases in breast-cancer rates associated with hair-relaxing frequency, age at first use, number of burns experienced, or type of product (lye or nonlye formulas).
