Don't be afraid of the dark -- six steps to deep nails. By Ellen Miller
Some cuttlefish use a cloud of ink to hide from predators, but this season's inky nail polishes are designed to get you noticed. "Deep blues and violets are replacing the vampy blacks from last season," says manicurist Deborah Lippmann. And fortunately, they're quite flattering -- on every skin tone. "More women can wear this trend than black, because it's not as harsh," says Ji Baek, owner of New York City's Rescue Beauty Lounges. However, these shades can make skin appear older and may be too much for women who work in buttoned-up offices (in which case a nonshimmery violet would be a safer choice). And those who don't have a lot of time on their hands should also beware, as dark colors tend to call attention to ragged cuticles, chips, and smudges. "You'll have to add a few extra steps so your nails don't look sloppy," Lippmann says. "Your manicure has to be perfect to be able to pull it off." With this expert advice, you ...
