Uncovered Girl Allure magazine deserves praise for its handling of the Britney Spears article ["Britney on Hold," September]. Instead of opting for yet another sensationalized headline that takes aim at a young woman who is going through something quite serious, you took the high road. I praise the author, Judith Newman, for digging deeper to understand Britney. This magazine's respect and desire for a sick girl's recovery has ensured at least one new reader for life. Britney, I loved you when you were perfect, but I will love you if you shave your hair, forget the joys of panties, or even if you get drunk from time to time. Just come back to us when you are good and ready. Emily Goldin Toronto, Ontario
As a journalist, I have to compliment Judith Newman for her honest, yet compassionate, take on the train wreck that is Britney Spears's life. I usually gloss over stories about celebrities, especially ones that are caught in the cyclone of the gossip industry. Newman's piece was a brilliant mashup of why we're fascinated, the behind-the-scenes element of journalism, and reminding the world that Spears is indeed human, and that her public meltdown may not be so funny after all. Peeling away the artifice was a powerful move, especially for a magazine known for its fashion and beauty tips. The next time one of my serious-journalist colleagues makes fun of my fashion mags, I'll point to this piece as proof that my "guilty pleasure" isn't all that guilty. Emmily Bristol Las Vegas
