Microsoft blows enterprise search open with free tool
Martin Veitch
Microsoft has released a beta version of Search Server 2008 and plans full delivery in the first half of 2008, with a free Express version as well as a paid-for product.
Although Search Server Express will not be the first free search tool, it will be the first not to impose a ceiling on the number of documents that can be searched.
"We feel enterprise search is still in its infancy but people have started questioning why they're paying [large sums] for these products," said Microsoft SharePoint product marketing manager Rob Gray.
Microsoft will also benefit from its brand familiarity and ability to integrate with existing Windows and Office programs. The combination of the Microsoft name and the program's capabilities should be enough to challenge IBM OmniFind, Google's Search Appliance and Mini box servers, and other products looking to attract a mainstream audience.
