Music Makes Your Child Smarter is an excellent resource for both teachers and parents. The book is divided into two major sections--the first section is the research and important aspects of why music can, and does, play such a significant role in a child's development; the second section lays out various activities within several age ranges that will allow children the opportunity to include music in their daily lives.

The research and information about child development is well-written and easily understood. Philip Sheppard is able to clearly explain the concepts in a way that is particularly useful for re-explaining to parents or to other educators. The book's first chapters are devoted to information about mental development, physical coordination, language, math and social skills and concludes with the importance of creativity and self-expression. In the second part of the book Sheppard includes musical activities for parents and teachers and a CD with various musical examples.
