When faced with a body of water, we tend to wade in slowly rather than jump right in. That's why we love the new sheer lip colors that allow us to test fall's biggest makeup trend -- the return of lipstick -- without having to dive in headfirst. Shiseido The Makeup Automatic Lip Crayon and Stila Long Wear Lip Color (shown in Serenade) both intersperse oils with pigments, putting them "somewhere between a gloss and a traditional lipstick," says cosmetic chemist Jim Hammer. "They're not very heavy, but still have a bit of shine and good color payoff." Similarly, Chanel Creme Gloss Lumiere (out in November) is a gel-based formula that brushes on like a gloss but has concentrated pigments for a slightly more vibrant color. Now go ahead, take a dip.
