1 BEYOND THE MAMMOGRAM

The Advance: MRI beats mammo alone in detecting the most aggressive forms of breast cancer, according to several recent trials.

Who it's For: High-risk women, including those with family history.

THE UPSHOT: The magnetic scanner can spot cancer in its earliest stages, when it's more easily treatable.

Keep in mind: MRI is not a substitute for a mammogram, in part because of its higher rate of false positives (often leading to unnecessary, even risky procedures), and is not for women at average risk.
