When I was little, I used to pretend to play the guitar," remembers Eleanor Friedberger, the lead singer of the Fiery Furnaces. "I liked to pour myself a glass of 7Up, pretend it was vodka, and sing and play along with records for hours," she says. It wasn't until she was eighteen and her older brother, Matthew, bought her a guitar for Christmas that she segued from "make-believe" to making actual music. A few years later the siblings-who were raised in suburban Chicago-moved to Brooklyn and formed their indie-rock duo. Or, as Matthew (a multi-instrumentalist) puts it, deploying his flawless deadpan, "We made our first record in 2002, it was released in 2003, and it's been nothing but gratifying success ever since."
