This month's Business Credit focuses on key performance indicators, also known as KPI's or metrics. Last year, I talked about some best practice metrics in one of my commentaries (see "Metrics Matter" in the November/December 2006 issue if you missed it). Since then, I know many of you have been busy tracking cycle times, DSO (by customer, product and division), incremental profitability of marginal accounts and individual team member results.

So ... what's next?

Leadership.

It's your ability to lead that will allow your senior management team to more seriously consider your perspective when it comes to determining strategic priorities in the first place. It's how you get your issues addressed.

It's your demonstrated leadership capabilities that get you an equal seat at the operational management table, giving you key opportunities to contribute to the broader business challenges of the day.
