How can you better secure your workplace? The majority of corporate theft is internal. How does this happen? This can occur with negligent hiring processes, as well as negligent internal investigations. A lack of communication or a breakdown of internal security procedure or equipment could also contribute to the internal breach. The best precaution is to know who you are hiring before you extend your trust and offer employment. Conducting appropriate background checks can help prevent some of the underlying behaviors that could stunt your company's potential growth. Contracting an outside investigative firm to handle all new prospective employee checks is a wise decision. A company that handles all background investigations internally could face accusations of biased decisions.

Several things to examine during an employment background check are: employment history, criminal history, credit history and any references. Although potential employees are entitled to an equal and fair opportunity based on their previous work experience, history, etc., taking precautionary measures to ensure that you are not employing a professional thief has its rewards.

What should you do in a case of investigating a non-U.S. citizen? Always review the individual's INS (Immigration and Naturalization Services) records to verify that they are up to date. Any discrepancies should be reported to the appropriate INS field office as soon as possible. Taking the proactive approach is the best action!
