SEOUL, Dec 3 Asia Pulse - SK Telecom Co. (KSE:017670), South Korea's top mobile carrier, said today it has signed an official deal to take over a controlling stake in Internet service operator Hanarotelecom Inc. (KSE:033630) to provide diverse communications to its customers and cope with fast-changing market conditions.
The deal calls for SK Telecom to purchase a 38.89 per cent stake in Hanarotelecom for 1.08 trillion won (US$1.17 billion). A total of 91.4 million shares will be bought for 11,900 won apiece, the company said in a statement.
The takeover deal will bring SK Telecom's holdings in Hanarotelecom to 43.59 per cent, making it the largest shareholder in the nation's second-largest Internet service operator, the company added.
Shares of SK Telecom opened 1.41 per cent higher, trading at 251,000 won on the Seoul bourse.
