Irvin Kahn & Son was founded in the 1920s as a wholesaler of washers, dryers and radios--an offshoot of the "main business," which was weaving small room-size oval braid rugs--by Irvin Kahn. After Irvin died unexpectedly in 1948, his son took over the business, which had by then evolved into strictly a wholesale flooring business that served most of Kentucky and parts of southern Indiana. Host of the business at that time was soft surface flooring materials--carpet and cushions. Irvin Kahn & Son was one of 13 flooring distributors in Kentucky.
Marshall Kahn entered into the business in 1971, directly after his graduation from Indiana University; his brother entered the business in 1982. By that time, Irvin Kahn & Son was selling more hard surface flooring--vinyl, tile and wood products. In the last 10 years, the industry has shifted to very little carpet or soft floor coverings and more laminates, resilient, tile, wood and porcelain product lines. Irvin Kahn & Son is now only one of two floor covering distributors headquartered in Louisville!
With distribution locations in Louisville and Indianapolis, Irvin Kahn & Son can service Kentucky, Indiana, southern and far-eastern Illinois and small parts of West Virginia. The longevity of the business, along with the fact that there is an "owner" at each location helps the company to provide the customer service that other companies might not be able to provide "long distance," and sets them apart from the rest.
