Counterfeit toothpaste labeled "Colgate" has been found in discount stores in Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. According to the Food and Drug Administration, some of the toothpaste does not contain fluoride, and some of it contains the poisonous chemical diethylene glycol (DEG). Also known as diglycol, DEG is used in antifreeze and as a solvent.
The FDA said the counterfeit toothApaste can be recognized by the label "Manufactured in South Africa." In addition, the packages have several misspellings, including "South African Dental Assoxiation," "SOUTH AFRLCA," and "isclinically." If you suspect you have purchased a counterfeit product, call Colgate-Palmolive at 800-468-6502.
