The fishing prowess of two Texas A & M University students put their school in the winners' circle at the 2007 annual BoatU.S. National Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship. And if turnout for the event and the enthusiasm of the young anglers are any indication, the future is bright for bass fishing as a college sport.
A & M's winning team of Justin Rackley and Trevor Knight joined 164 other student anglers at the event, held Sept. 24-26 on Lewisville Lake, TX. That's more than twice the number of teams and competitors that last year's inaugural event reeled in.
"We had 83 teams from 48 colleges and universities fishing for the title this year," reports Mike Pellerin, director of the BoatU.S. Angler Program, tournament title sponsor. "We were thrilled last year when 20 schools sent teams so this year's entries show bass fishing is clearly on the college sports roster now.

"At least 25 of the new entries this year formed their teams specifically to compete in the BoatU.S. tournament," Pellerin adds. "That's no small feat in itself because teams must meet Collegiate Bass Anglers Association criteria and be sanctioned by the parent institution."
Pellerin notes that the tournament had the support of two dozen sponsors, like Ranger Boats, Yamaha Outboards, life jacket giant Sterns, Inc. ...
