It was a wonderful pleasure to delve into this comprehensive, 91-page inventory of the unique and beautifully preserved collection of stringed instruments at Juilliard. Amadeus Press must be credited with the production of a book that is handsome in all respects, from the exquisite photography of Tucker Densley, to the typeface, to the binding. The author, Lisa B. Robinson, who works at Juilliard as a senior writer for special projects and proposals, writes in a succinct, clear style that serves only to enhance the orderly design of the book.
Robinson begins her survey with brief histories of Juilliard and its illustrious string department. Following an overview of the collection, the reader is treated to handsome color plates and descriptions of 11 "Instruments of Special Historical Significance" (including gems by Amati, del Gesh, Grancino, Guarneri and Stradivarius) and 14 "Other Instruments of Special Historical Significance" and three "Important Bows in the Collection" (a Fetique, a Francoise Xavier Tourte, and a Nicolas ...
