Whether a legitimate claim or not, disputes are costly in more ways than one. The costs can be viewed in terms of the quality of the relationship, the activity required to address it and the cash impact due to the delay in payment. Disputes hit at the holistic aspects of customer-to-cash. How can you best address cost, cash and service? Surely, a customer with a dispute will require more attention, pay later (or not at all) and be less than happy--possibly even defecting to a competitor. This risk increases as the recurrence of invoice error increases. Dispute management needs to be recognized as a customer-facing activity impacting satisfaction and retention.
