Physical Attraction
The first time I exercised for something other than fun, I was motivated
not by thin thighs or six-pack abs: I wanted an easy quarter-credit in college. The class had some dry, pretend-academic name, like
Health Physiatrics, but it was plain and simple weight lifting and jogging around a dusty indoor track. The calisthenics were just like
the uninspired ones my father did before work, following a book for
the Royal Canadian Air Force. It didn't matter; I was hooked. After that college class, I started running around the Central Park reservoir, then working out with a trainer at a gym, a pursuit that left me unspeakably sore and nearly broke. Over the
