Women increasingly are winning presidencies of colleges and universities. More than half of the Big 10 universities have had a woman president. In July Drew Gilpin Faust became Harvard University's first woman president, so now four of the eight Ivy League schools have women presidents.

Despite such gains, women hold only about 23% of college or university presidencies, according to The American College President: 2007 edition, by the American Council on Education. Little data exists on the women presidents, especially those who are the first at their schools: their experiences, their hopes and their challenges.
