The lonely, harried dissertator may be a thing of the past if schools pay attention to tips from the Council of Graduate Schools' seven-year project to speed up the PhD process.
Representing 480 Canadian and American universities, the watchdog group is just halfway through its study, but already has some items of note from studying statistics of 43,354 doctoral recipients of 2005:
* The average student takes 8.2 years to get a PhD.
* Half of students drop out during the PhD process.
* 12% of PhD grads have more than $50,000 in debt.
