Little by little, higher education is becoming more family-friendly, not just because it's the right thing to do, but in order to help recruit and retain faculty and students:

* A Harvard medical student got an extra hour of break time during her nine-hour medical licensing exam so that she can pump milk to breast feed her five-month old daughter, under a ruling by a Massachusetts appeals court judge. She must pass the test before starting a residency.

* More than 20 Michigan colleges and universities are forming a higher ed consortium to recruit and retain faculty and staff by helping find jobs for spouses at nearby schools. Current presidents of the University of ...
