When P.T. Barnum tried to stage the first American beauty pageant in 1854, he failed to find enough willing women (an unsullied reputation was a requirement) to field a competition. A century and a half on, the pageant circuit is thriving -- from Miss Hell Hole Swamp (held in Jamestown, South Carolina; population: 97) all the way up to Miss Universe.
