The New Classics
Lively colors replace the usual autumn shades -- but look just as polished. By Meirav Devash
A good thriller uses the element of surprise to keep us on the edge of our seats. And this season, it looks as if makeup artists have stolen a page from Tom Clancy's handbook, taking the established fall palette (charcoal eyes, burgundy lips) and giving it a twist with colors like teal, tangerine, and champagne. "It's time to get away from the fall cliches," says makeup artist Dick Page. "The key is to apply unpredictable shades with refinement and precision." Another revelation: Unlike the usual somber fall tones, "these colors are playful," says makeup artist Chrisanne Davis. "They're happy, they bring warmth to the face, and they're easy for any woman to pull off." What a pleasant surprise.

a cork. Here, Page toned down the natural lip color with
beige lipstick, then slicked on a champagne-hued gloss.
"The warm sheen makes lips look fresh," Davis says. Metallic satin gabardine dress with crystals and alpaca-
