New tricks keep your foundation and

The definition of "base" (adj) is not classical or refined. But the base (n, syn foundation) on the fall runways was just the opposite: polished and ladylike. That's because, unlike formulas of the past, "lighter silicones and better light-diffusing particles allow foundation to cover imperfections without looking or feeling heavy on the skin," says Jim Hammer, a cosmetic chemist. This is a good thing, says makeup artist Pat McGrath, since tinted moisturizer isn't sufficient for the grown-up look of the season. But finding the right shade is still paramount for getting the best look. Test the foundation in natural light on the jawline, and keep in mind that yellow- or golden-based shades are generally more flattering than those with pink undertones.
