Cecilia Beaux (Fig. 3), the celebrated turn-of-the-century figure painter, is traditionally regarded as a product of her Philadelphia upbringing and artistic training, and the city is right to proudly claim her as its own. Beaux was born and raised in the Quaker stronghold and spent most of her professional life there. Yet like the other painters of her generation, she came of age at a time when European travel was viewed as essential to an artistic education, and her initial stay in France proved to be a turning point in her professional development and ambition.
