IT WAS STILL DAYLIGHT when Daniel arrived in New York City. He was one of the lucky few whose suitcase arrived with him. He had 20 dollars in his pocket and a piece of paper torn out of his brother Tadeo's notebook with a name and address of a man who knew of his other brother, Manuel, who had made the trip a number of times before him. In his suitcase he also carried a coffee can filled with Dominican coins. American machines mistook them for quarters, nickels and dimes. It was la napa. His brother gave him the can of coins in good fortune.
