Rinku Sen's piece "Are Immigrants and Refugees People of Color?" [July/Aug. 2007] contextualizes the use of the label "people of color," while maintaining a "transitional tone" that maintains an openness to other options.
Nevertheless, I would like to contest a bit further the label "people of color" ... just to undertake the role of a progressive devil's advocate of sorts.
The term "people of color" when I was growing up in Puerto Rico (in Spanish) had the connotation of a euphemism (and condescension) instead of the liberatory connotations that Rinku argues the term has here in the U.S. [And while] the term attempts to broaden a fighting camp of those marginalized (instead of just talking about "Blacks"), that broadening is at the expense of excluding.
