My family emigrated to a densely Puerto Rican community in the U.S. mainland when I was 12 years old. Identity, nationalism and anger at the way I felt treated by white people were the defining factors in my early political development. As I grew and learned, I, like many other Latinos, looked to the more developed Black liberation movement for guidance and solidarity.
While my American experience is exceptional for someone from my background--one of the lucky few working-class Latinos to achieve higher education--my experience is still undoubtedly the social and political experience of a person of color. This person of color identity is one that I claim even as I'm aware that it is not always transferable to other Latinos or to Latin ...
