Cuba has launched Hoteles E--a lodging chain that'll eventually include 50 establishments throughout the island and represent a unique alternative to beach resorts.

Spanish news agency EFE reports that the chain's first property was inaugurated Sept. 5 by Tourism Minister Manuel Marrero in the central city of Cienfuegos: Hotel Encantao Palacio Azul, a converted 1920s mansion, is part of this new initiative to restore vintage buildings in Cuba's main historical squares and convert them into hotels.

Marrero said the Hoteles E plan "sprung out of an unsatisfied demand for tours [of the island] and cultural-historical tourism," and that it …
