A long-standing power struggle between the rival Shi'ite groups - the Sadrists and their JaM and the Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council (SIIC) and its Badr force - on Aug. 28 erupted into a war in Karbala'; at least 52 people were killed and over 300 others were wounded by gunmen with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades who fought street battles amid crowds of pilgrims. The battle began as JaM gunmen traded fire with government security forces heavily infiltrated by Badr elements.
