Nov. 1--A few fishermen have been startled by the occasional appearance of a sea lion making an appearance around Verona -- even Shanghai Bend, but there is no mysterious lake monster to tell of in the Mid-Valley area.
In fact, the closest thing to a Halloween tale is just how scary bad the salmon fishing has been this fall.
The bite is still off, if not the hope of the anglers who wait.
"I heard from one guy who said they are coming," a cautious Ted Yates of Johnson's Bait and Tackle in Yuba City said, noting the information could be more trick than treat, and definitely more second- and third-hand than fish-wrapper news.
"He said he heard they are catching (salmon) in Isleton and as far up as Freeport, which, if true, means they will be up here in about a week."
Of course, there are some salmon being reeled in, and good size.
