Nov. 1--It all started when students, members of the Women in Science and Engineering program at Stony Brook University, sought opportunities to mentor girls and younger women who have interests in math, science and engineering professions. They spent the summer making plans and writing proposals and now are set to receive a $4,500 grant to start such a role-model program at middle and high schools.
The formal announcement of the award will be made Wednesday at the 13th annual Women Achievers Against the Odds breakfast in Woodbury, sponsored by the Long Island Fund for Women and Girls. It will make a total of 23 grants totaling just over $125,000 to area organizations. (See Lifwg.org.)
