Oct. 30--Donors have anted up more than $652 million to Indiana University since July 2003 as part of its Matching the Promise fundraising campaign, putting the school well on track to meet its $1 billion goal by June 2010, and giving low-income students the chance to obtain an affordable education.
The campaign has been under way for four years in a "silent phase," but Monday marked the beginning of the public part.
IU President Michael McRobbie said the major donations have gone to help students in low- and middle-income families go on to attend IU.
The goal is to "create an endowment to significantly and permanently provide reduced cost of tuition," McRobbie said.
Included in the $652 million already raised is approximately $216 million solely devoted to fellowship and scholarship endowments.
Before the Matching the Promise program, IU Bloomington had about $151 million in scholarship and fellowship endowments. That amount has more than doubled in the four years the program has been in place.
