Oct. 31--ADELANTO -- The Boys and Girls Club of the Victor Valley is working to open more facilities in the area, starting with the Silverado High School campus.
The club has operated its Adelanto facility for the past two years using gifts from fo u n d at i o n s a n d p r ivat e donors.
The club's latest gift was $650,000 from San Bernardino County that enabled the club to pay off debt and focus its efforts on opening more clubhouses.
A temporary trailer facility at Silverado High School will open Jan. 15, and the club will move to its own building in August 2008, said Georgette Phillips, the small-learningcommunities coordinator for Silverado High School.
Phillips said there is a disconnect between the community and schools. "Now we need community in schools," she said. "It's all about the kids."
Silverado Principal Terry Colvin said there is an economic need for after-school programs and it is important that students have pride in these programs. "You are fighting a losing battle until they can feel pride for their facilities," he said.
