Ford's Expedition EL is a huge SUV that, like the Chevrolet Suburban, can carry nine passengers and their luggage, and still tow a heavy trailer.
For the most part, the EL succeeds as a Suburban challenger. Compared with the Suburban, it has a roomier third-row seat, it handles better, and it accelerated more quickly (17.5 seconds) while towing our 5,000-pound test trailer. But the Expedition's ride is stiffer, it gets even worse fuel economy (13 mpg vs. 14), and the engine frequently sounds coarse and strained. We can't predict the reliability of this freshened model.
