General Electric has recalled 2.5 million built-in dishwashers sold as the brands Eterna, GE, GE Profile, GE Monogram, Hotpoint, and Sears-Kenmore. The liquid rinse-aid in those machines can leak from the dispenser onto the dishwasher's internal wiring, which can cause an electrical short and overheating and poses a fire hazard. This is the same problem that prompted a recall of 2.3 million Maytag and Jenn-Air dishwashers earlier this year.
According to Julie Vallese, a spokes-woman for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the agency is researching the issue to see whether it is a problem industrywide.
