NOEL PEARSON recognises that Aboriginal politics found its voice over the past thirty years or so through a left-wing alliance, but is now unable to find a comfortable ally amongst the "stifling orthodoxies" of the "tribalism of Australian political and cultural life". For him the inclination of Australian thinking on Aboriginal issues is what James McAuley might see as the fight hand blessing the victims of the left, after the left hand blessed the victims of the right. Pearson calls for Australians to re-commit to a "cultural plurality" despite the failures of "progressive and left-liberal orthodoxies".
