IT IS DIFFICULT not to feel a little sorry for journalists involved in the current protracted and extremely boring election campaign. Far from the idealistic model of journalists as reporters who go out and find the news, they are in a world in which most of the news has to be invented day by day. The Prime Minister trips--and for several days it is the main political story. Was the trip due to old age and failing faculties? On the contrary, was his rapid and springy recovery evidence that he remains fit and well, the trip having been a random event of the kind that could happen to anyone of any age or state of health? Who cares?--But at least it was something to write ...
