Few women go into athletics administration because they like asking for money. But it comes with the territory. Instead of resisting, embrace fundraising as a game you can win and you'll boost your career along with your sports program.
Cherri M. Mankenberg and Rosie Stallman described how at the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA) in Sacramento CA in October. Former coaches and administrators with impressive fundraising track records, they now lead the consulting firm Project FUNdrai$e for athletics administrators.
NACWAA president-elect Joan Cronan, director of women's athletics at the University of Tennessee, moderated the session. She said fundraising success requires a team, a passion and a budget--and can advance a career.
Move beyond fear
Asking for money turns the strongest people into wimps. "It's our fears that make it a challenge," Stallman said. Most of all, we fear rejection.
As a softball and volleyball coach, she directed athletics at both Texas Wesleyan University and Eastern New Mexico State University, where her fundraising successes included the only sell-out in ENMU football history. Later she served five years as NCAA director of education outreach.
