It was nearly 6 p.m.: the house was bathed in the comforting, precocious darkness of July, that velvety, humid, maternal darkness which she had come to anticipate with delight. Little Lucy Ming's evening practice had begun. Tonight, she was trying to clear her way through the lacy intricacies of a Chopin waltz.

The Polish Widow opened the front door to let the music in.

Excuse me ... said a voice coming from the front verandah. Doctor Bill stood up from the cane armchair.

What are you doing, out here, in the dark? Why didn't you ring the bell?
