CHIAROSCURO 
In response to John Constable's 
"A Boat Passing a Lock", 1826 
 
   "I was always determined ... that my pictures should 
   have chiaroscuro, if they had nothing else." 
 
   The pilgrims follow the hawthorn hedge 
   and enter the water meadow through the lovers gate 
 
   Hugging the river, they seek the things he loved 
   the sound of water escaping from mill dams 
   old rotten banks, slimy posts and brickwork 
 
   The wind slip-streams the willows on the bank 
   or is it the motor-way hissing whining
