Those tough years leading up to the make-or-break tenure decision are bound to be stressful. Some faculty find helpful support; others (especially women) feel left to flounder. A few give up and to leave even before seeking tenure.
With baby boomers approaching retirement, the number of new faculty will grow and with it the need to support them toward tenure. What works? Six women researchers in the department of curriculum and instruction at East Carolina University in Greenville NC researched pre-tenure support systems across the state. They were:
