Regarding "Pushing National IDs" (July 9 issue), the key is to weigh the imminently obtainable benefits against the sacrifices or risks given to secure the benefits.

As I see it, the loss of civil autonomy and erosion of our civil rights would be immediate and permanent; the promised safety cannot be demonstrated and in fact may never occur.

This is at the very least an unbalanced argument and at worst an insult to the resolve and intelligence of the people of the United States.

CHRIS BARTON

Trenton, New Jersey

Dennis Behreandt's article "Pushing National IDs" is a somewhat contrived but otherwise representative example of the paranoia around the notion of citizen identification.

Most negative arguments relate to some perceived loss of privacy and fears that the government will use the information in ways that will unduly harm individuals. Also, there are some practical considerations like the difficulty in performing background checks before issuing the ID. These can all be remedied with attention to detail, diligent maintenance, and explicit appeals recourse.
