In 1968, Rita Sanders Geier was just a 23-year-old teacher at Tennessee State University in Nashville, but she sued the University of Tennessee demanding equality and diversity in the state educational system.
When the University of Tennessee wanted to start a Nashville campus, she feared that it would attract the white students and faculty away from her school, creating a segregated educational system.
Geier went on to a career in federal jobs, including working for the Social Security Administration and the Department of Justice in Washington DC.
Finally in 2001, the state settled her lawsuit, agreeing to funnel $77 million to help fund projects to diversify students and faculty at the state's public universities.
