Professors at the University of Georgia have launched a multi-faceted campaign for more childcare on campus. The group has a web site, a petition drive and plans for a rally to draw attention to the issue.
The group, Campus Coalition for Expanding Childcare at UGA, consists of 70 members including students, staff and professors. UGA has 33,000 students and 9,300 faculty and staff members, but only 56 childcare spots for infants and toddlers. The school's Head Start and pre-kindergarten programs aren't much roomier and have a waiting list of 250.
"Lots of universities have expanded childcare recently, but we're not even at the point of acknowledging that it's something people need," said Susan Mattern, an associate professor of history and the campaign leader. ...
