A California state senator predicted the introduction of legislation next year to force state schools to better comply with Title IX as it applies to women's athletics.
As featured on page one of the August issue of WIHE, two Title IX lawsuits on bias against women coaches at California state schools cost state taxpayers more than $9 million in July. At UC Berkeley, ex-coach Karen Moe Humphreys settled for more than $3.5 million and reinstatement into her job. At CSU Fresno, a jury awarded ex-coach Lindy Vivas $5.85 million for bias.
Four days after the Fresno ruling, State Senator Dean Florez created and chaired a five-member subcommittee to investigate whether bias against women's athletics is widespread in California's higher education systems.
As chair of the state senate's Select Committee on Gender Discrimination and Title IX Implementation, he said, "These are public universities and the question is, why are we paying such large amounts when we should be complying with Title IX in the first place?"
