Today's college students are more self-centered and narcissistic than their predecessors, according to a recent study done by five psychologists.

Jean Twenge, a professor at San Diego State University, and four colleagues examined the responses of 16,475 students who completed the Narcissistic Personality Inventory between 1982 and 2006.

Two-thirds of today's students scored above average on the NPI, compared with about 36% in 1982. While narcissism can be helpful in dealing with new situations, "narcissism can also have very negative consequences for society, including the breakdown of close relationships with others," said W.
